ArenaNet’s Guild Wars 2 Manifesto

We founded ArenaNet to innovate, so Guild Wars 2 is our opportunity to question everything. To make a game that defies existing conventions.”
- Mike O’Brien, Founder, ArenaNet

ArenaNet has recently posted a new video on the Guild Wars 2 website which they are calling the MMO Manifesto. It’s a 5minute long video which starts off with various members of the ArenaNet team explaining their reasoning behind many of the new game mechanics in their new game.

They’re pretty big claims for a genre that is being dominated by World of Warcraft. Over the years we’ve seen many challengers rise up only to be knocked back down, in some cases within six months.

Guild Wars 2 – Professions and Combat

Today is the 5th birthday of Guild Wars, and in honour of this big event, ArenaNet is continuing the news release for Guild Wars 2.

However, instead of adding to the blog that was launched yesterday, the Guild Wars 2 website updated for two new sections; PROFESSIONS and COMBAT.

Professions, for now, only displays information on the Elementalist. While much was already presumed about this class returning, the skills have had a complete make over and some have much different effects to the original game’s alternatives. To top it off, there are a few videos and pictures to wet your appetite with at the bottom.

Guild Wars 2 – Just as Promised

ArenaNet hinted that there would be more info “soon” and they weren’t lying. As well as carrying on with their painting-in-progress (see below), showing a character (possibly an Elementalist?) they have now begun work on the Guild Wars 2 Design Manifesto – a Developer’s Blog aiming to present details on various aspects of game play leading up to the release of the game.

Quite a few exciting details were given today, such as the new “environmental weapons” system (which includes hacking off your opponent’s limbs and using them as weapons to fight against them), and further details on the “persistant world” aspect.

Recently, the Guild Wars 2 FaceBook group has been uploading various non-descript things (for example they are currently uploading pictures of a painting, with a few extra details every day, until the picture is complete, as well as an interview that “Kill Ten Rats” had with ArenaNet’s Global Brand Director, Chris Lye.)

In the latter (which can be read HERE), Lye mentions that the veil is soon to be unveiled. However, all Guild Wars fans know that “soon” for Arena Net could be anywhere within the next year. ;)

Guild Wars Concept Art – Part 4

ArenaNet has posted the fourth and final part of their GDC2010 presentation. The last part showcases some new armour designs, landscapes (including underwater) and creatures.

This look into the world of Guild Wars 2 hasn’t revealed much, but has sparked a lot of speculation among Guild Wars fans; Will players be able to play as children? What’s with the new Asuran power source? Norn pirates? Are assassins are back? Why are those monsters so big? NORN PIRATES? Will there be vehicles capable of flight? Will there be mounts? NORN PIRATES?!?!

Guild Wars Concept – Art Part 3

ArenaNet has posted the third video showcasing some concept art from their GDC2010 presentation, showing off a fair amount of enemies and armour designs that have yet to be seen. There’s even a small segment of an in game cutscene in there, so keep your eyes peeled. Expect the fourth part in the next few days. Be sure to watch the video on YouTube for high definition.

Guild Wars 2 at GDC 2010

With more and more news on ArenaNet‘s eagerly anticipated sequel, Guild Wars 2, being released, it seems appropriate that we update to inform you of new information and news as it comes out.

This news piece mainly focuses on ArenaNet’s lead artist, Daniel Dociu, who aswell as having an interview with Massively.com last week about how concept art is important to the game, also showcased some concept art at this years Games Developers Conference.

The art was so successful that ArenaNet staff decided to publish videos on their YouTube channel. While only 2 parts are up right now, 2 more parts have been promised but with an unspecified date.
